Hard Water – The culprit behind hair loss, really?

Are you tired of changing shampoos and buying expensive hair products to solve your hair loss problems? Are you tired of trying new hair treatments to get those beautiful luscious locks? Then maybe it’s time to check the water you use. Hair loss has become one of the most common problems for people all over the world. And yes, there may be several other reasons for premature hair loss. But, have you ever considered the quality of water you use to wash your hair each time? Hard water is one of the biggest reasons for hair fall today, especially in the urban areas.

What exactly is Hard Water?

Hard water is basically water with a high mineral content. These minerals mostly include Calcium and Magnesium in high amounts. They may also include Manganese or other multivalent cations which contribute to achieve a measure of hardness. Hard water generally occurs naturally when water percolates through calcium carbonates or magnesium carbonate, such as chalk or limestone. Although hard water is not a health risk when used for drinking, it causes a great deal of damage when used for hair.

Why is Hard Water harmful for your hair?

Hard water is rich in minerals and oxidizers which weaken your hair follicles. The minerals present in hard water are neither good for your hair, nor your scalp. They tend to weaken your hair making them dry and frizzy. Exposing your hair regularly to hard water can lead to thin and brittle hair, premature greying, dandruff problems, split ends and various hair loss issues.

Effective Solutions for hair loss problems caused by Hard Water

1.Water Softener

A water softener is basically a mechanical appliance which is installed in your home’s water supply system. This appliance uses a process called ion exchange where it exchanges minerals for something else, in most cases, sodium. This removes the hardness from the water, making it soft water. Not only can soft water help you with your hair loss, but, it can also treat skin conditions like dryness and eczema.

2.Alum

You can add some alum to your bucket of water to make it soft. Alum contains unique properties which will allow the minerals to settle down for some time. This in turn prevents oxidization thus decreasing hair fall.

3.Clarifying Shampoo

Using a good clarifying shampoo can help you in dealing with hard water. Clarifying shampoo remove all the dirt and built up from the scalp making it squeaky clean. It also adds shine and volume to your tresses.

4.Olive Oil

Oiling has been one of the oldest and best solutions to all of our hair problems. Olive oil is known for being a natural conditioner for hair. It is rich in fatty acids and antioxidants which are really beneficial to the hair. Olive oil can be mixed with other organic oils like coconut oil or almond oil and massaged onto the scalp. This will provide the hair and scalp with the required proteins and nutrients, thus preventing hair loss. For best results, use Satthwa Premium Hair Oil regularly.

5.Shower Filter

Shower filters are the cheaper and rather temporary alternatives to water softeners. They come in a variety of different shapes and sizes which fit directly onto your showerhead. These filters effectively remove the hardness of water and relieve you from your hair fall and dry skin problems.

6.Vinegar

Giving your hair a vinegar rinse can make your hair strong and shiny. For this purpose you’ll need one cup of apple cider vinegar and three cups of water. Rinse your hair with this solution regularly to add strength and luster to your hair.

7.Lemon

Rinsing your hair with lemon water regularly can help in removing any kind of residue built up from your scalp. Lemon helps in restoring the natural oil in the scalp which makes the hair strong and healthy. Atlernatively, you can also add lemon juice to your shampoo and wash your hair with it.

8.Eggs

Eggs are a great conditioner for dry and damaged hair. They contain a lot of proteins and vitamins which can make hair healthy and promote hair growth. To make an egg mask for your hair add 2 beaten eggs, a cup of curd and some almond oil to a bowl. Apply this mixture to your hair twice a week to get radiant, strong and thick hair.

5 things you are doing wrong, which is leading to hair fall

Top 5 things you are doing right now which is making your hair fall even more.

1. Using coarse pillow cover: Most of us sleep on cotton pillow covers and there is nothing wrong with that, however some cotton covers are rough to the touch and when you toss and turn your head on those covers, hairs get tangled between the rough pillow threads and they break off. Change your pillowcase to a high thread count cotton case or use silk covers.

2. Applying too much shampoo: Reduce your shampoo usage, apply only 1–2 times a week and rest of the time, just wash with water. Sulfates and Parabens in the shampoo cause more damage then you know. Do not use Anti-dandruff shampoo as your regular shampoo and for prolonged periods, the loads of chemicals which go into an antidandruff shampoo will spoil your hair. To remove harsh dandruff, use lemongrass oil.

3. Drying your hair: Do not vigorously rub your hair with the towel, this leads to unnecessary hair trauma, instead gently pat dry your hair with a towel or cover your hair with a towel and give it 10–15 min till the towel soaks all the water. Avoid blow-drying your hair on high heat, this flash dries not only the moisture on your hair but also dries the scalp which makes the hair brittle.

4. Daily oiling your hair daily: Daily oiling your hair is not required, in fact if you oil your scalp and hair and go about your daily business, the oil will attract lots of dust and pollution and close the pores of the scalp which will result in less oxygen going into the roots and making them week, We have written an entire article on this which you can read here.

If you need to apply oil daily, make sure you do that only with a few drops and only to your hair length and not to scalp.

5. Not Massaging your scalp daily: Massaging your scalp not only makes you feel good but also increase the blood circulation in the scalp, this make blood reach the hair roots and makes them stronger.
